As we sit struggling to find the right words to convey to you all the love that is in our hearts, we think of your heart. How heavy it must feel with the decision that weighs on it. How overflowing with love it must be for you to be considering your child’s needs in such an extraordinary way. While we may stumble to find the best words to describe our family and how excited we are to welcome a new little one into our life, what we can say with 100% certainty is that through every step of this process, through first smiles, first steps, and first days at school, we will always be mindful of and grateful for all the love that is in your heart and the fact that you would choose to give this most precious gift to us.
Thank you for reading our letter.
We are Jenn and Steve and we live in San Diego, CA with our 14-year-old son Christian. Steve and I were married, and we all became a family, five years ago. We’d both been married once before; married too young and before knowing what we were really all about. When we met each other eight years ago, everything was different, and we knew we’d each found the person we wanted to spend the rest of our lives with.
Our faith is very important to both of us, and we feel so blessed that God brought us together when He did.
Getting to be Christian’s step-mom has been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life and I’m so proud of the relationship we have. Steve and I get along great with Christian’s mother, with shared baseball games and birthday parties and other family gatherings.
Steve grew up in Nebraska and moved to San Diego when he joined the Marines right out of High School. After serving for four years, he went to San Diego State University, then to Law School where he studied tax law. He works at a CPA firm and loves to write in his spare time.
Jenn grew up in San Diego and went to college there as well, graduating with a degree in psychology. She has been in non-profit fundraising for the past 15 years, working for both the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. In her free time, she sings in church and with a band that plays at weddings and parties. She also writes songs and has done some recording.
We both enjoy traveling and finding new restaurants to try. We love going to the movies, baseball games and other sporting events, and spending time on the water since we live so close to beach.
We have a big extended family with the best grandparents (on both sides) and lots of aunts and uncles and cousins. Family is very important to us. Steve and I both grew up in loving homes with great parents and siblings and we want to give that same experience to our children.
We have quite a bit of fun at our house! We’re pretty silly so there’s always a lot of laughing. We like to have all kinds of music playing. Steve and Christian play the guitar and bass and Jenn plays the piano. We also like family movie nights, complete with popcorn and junior mints!
Holidays are very special to us and we have a lot of important traditions, especially at Christmas. We love putting up the tree and decorating it with ornaments we’ve collected from fun trips together. We love Christmas movies and try and go see a play like A Christmas Carol or How the Grinch Stole Christmas during the holiday season. And each year, one of Steve’s favorite traditions is to have friends and cousins over to decorate gingerbread houses.
At Halloween we love to make all kinds of fun treats and deck the house out for trick-or-treaters. And every Fourth of July we go out in the San Diego Bay on Jenn’s parents’ boat to watch the fireworks.
We plan a summer trip each year, and over the past few years have traveled to Boston, Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, Montana, Seattle, and Northern California. Most of Steve’s family lives in Nebraska so we make at least one trip there every year to spend time with his parents, brother and sister and their families. We also like to take Christian on what we call “Adventure Days” here in San Diego where we drive up to the mountains and go gold-mining, take a train up north for lunch, or spend the day playing at the beach.
We live in a wonderful, safe neighborhood where we love to take walks and play ball. We are surrounded by family and friends that are ready and waiting for the opportunity to shower a new little one with love and affection.
Christian is so sweet with his younger cousins and will make the best big brother! He’s kind and sensitive and so excited to teach his new little sister or brother so many things!
Jenn about Steve
Steve is such a great dad – not only is he fun and SO funny, constantly cracking us up, he has the best heart and cares so deeply for his family. He spends quality time with Christian, helping with homework and playing catch, and he also really listens to him and talks with him about important things to help instill confidence in himself and in our faith in God.
Steve about Jenn
Jennifer was, and is, so gracious with Christian. Beginning with the first time she met him, and all our shared experiences since, I have learned immeasurably from her, about selflessness and opening your heart to genuinely love and care for a child who is not biologically related. She takes nothing for granted when it comes to the privilege of parenting; it’s how I know she will be a true gift to any child we are so blessed to adopt in to our family.
Our home is filled with so much love – for each other and for Christian, and we are so anxious to grow our family and share all that we have to give with a new little one.
This is the most important letter we’ve ever written. If we’ve left anything out, or you have any questions at all, we’d love the chance to sit down with you and help you get to know us better.
If we were to have the privilege of being your child’s parents, you can be certain that in between bedtime stories, singing You Are My Sunshine, and kissing skinned knees, we will tell them about you and how much you love them. We will tell them how big your heart is… so big, you found room in it for us.
Thank you for considering us as you make this important decision.
